Fasteners - Lockbolts Avdelok® LD
The Avdelok® LD lockbolt (Avdelok® Large Diameter) is a two piece assembly consisting of a bolt and collar. Although they are in the blind fastener family, they are not blind fasteners as access is required from both sides of the workpiece to install the bolts and collars. They provide higher shear strength, tensile strength, clamp load and vibration resistance than any other product in the Avdel® blind fastener family. The Avdelok® LD lockbolt is available in steel only with diameter ranges of 1/2" to 1" and round or 90o countersunk head styles. The Avdelok® LD lockbolt fastening system relies on proper installation of the collar onto the bolt for maximum joint performance. The collar is pressed onto the bolt and material from the collar flows into the grooves of the bolt creating a virtually tamper proof joint. Additionally, as the application draws closer together, a flange is formed at the base of the collar next to the rear application sheet. This creates a load bearing surface, which absorbs the force of setting the fastener. Otherwise the setting force, or clamp load, might spread into the application and damage the material. The Avdelok® LD lockbolt does have a breaknotch (much like a breakstem rivet), which makes it a single grip fastener. This implies that the application hole size and grip range must meet the specified ranges to ensure proper installation and performance. Quick and simple to place yet lasting for years, they are the ideal solution where spot welding is not practical or possible. With tensile strength of over 300kN, large diameter Avdelok® LD lockbolts are widely used in demanding engineering industries throughout the world including railways, construction, mining, bridge building and crane maintenance.
